Mikko’s journey hasn’t been easy. He developed epilepsy at the age of 12 and, despite trying different medications over the past four years, hasn’t had success in reducing his seizures. Now 16, Mikko experiences multiple tonic-clonic seizures every day. Along with his epilepsy, he is also autistic and has a language disorder, which means his family carefully manages his care and well-being.

Mikko’s neurologist expressed concern that he is at risk of SUDEP (sudden unexpected death from epilepsy) due to the severity of his seizures. Mikko’s mum supports him around the clock, monitoring him even at night. But with the ongoing worry about cardiac arrest, there was a need for an additional layer of safety.

Support from Fund for Good

Through Fund for Good, Mikko’s family received the funding needed to purchase a portable defibrillator. Having this crucial device at home has not only brought peace of mind but could also save his life in an emergency.

What’s even more special is that the family registered the defibrillator on the defibrillator location map. This means that the device is now available for others in their community in case of an emergency nearby. A beautiful way to give back and keep others safe as well.

For Mikko and his whanau, having the defibrillator provides reassurance that they’re taking every possible step to keep Mikko safe and give him the best chance at a long life. It’s a small but significant support that makes a world of difference.

Congratulations to Mikko and his whanau on being one of this year’s Fund for Good recipients.
